Hopkinsville plans to resurface 28 city streets as repair costs climb

Hopkinsville plans to resurface 28 city streets this fiscal year, thanks in part to more than $800,000 in local money the city council approved. Public Works Director Mike Perry laid out the plan for city officials, and the list of 28 includes portions of Bill Flynn Boulevard, Mechanic Street and West Second Street.

  • Street construction and repairs: about $1 million budgeted
  • Sidewalk construction: $100,000 set aside
  • Finished so far: Millbrook Drive and Karen Drive
  • Resurfacing cost: up roughly 25 to 33 percent in two years

The city is waiting for Rogers Group to begin work on the remaining streets, and the goal is to finish as much as possible before winter. To pick streets, Public Works uses an AI-based pavement assessment system that records road conditions with a smartphone mounted inside a vehicle.

The city also sends state officials a yearly list of roads it believes need attention, and Perry pointed to Main Street and Virginia Street as examples of roads where the city has advocated for state resurfacing in recent years. Perry said those requests can take two or three years to bring improvements.

The Christian County Animal Shelter is adding about 36 kennels

If you're headed to the Christian County Animal Shelter, call ahead. Construction is underway on an expansion that Judge-Executive Jerry Gilliam says will mean more room for animals, better health and safety, and a more comfortable adoption process for families.

One priority is cutting the risk of illness spreading among animals housed in close quarters. The front of the building is being renovated too, because Gilliam said the current meet-and-greet area is cramped. He spoke about the work at the Christian Fiscal Court meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

“It'd be nice if everyone would call and kind of make an appointment because construction's going on.”

  • Finish: early to mid-spring, the county hopes
  • Hours: regular business hours, closed Mondays

A cigar named after a dad: Caratha Z. Buckner, founder of C's Casa de Cigar, is unveiling Buck 333, a prototype cigar named in tribute to her late father, Cardies L. Buckner. The reveal is Saturday, Nov. 7, at Fancy's Liquor & Bar. Her grandfather was a tobacco farmer, so this one runs in the family. A smoky salute indeed.
